These aren’t your nana’s one piece swimwear styles.

It’s been almost a hundred years since the first one-piece made a splash and caused a

scene in pools and on beaches around the world.

Known as the “Diving Venus” and the “Australian Mermaid,” Annette Kellerman was one of the most famous women of her time, but we’ve almost forgotten her name. And while you’ve probably never heard of her, you’ve got a lot to thank her for—she invented the one-piece in 1905.

Annette was a famous record-breaking athlete, film actress and vaudeville star who reduced the amount of clothing women had to wear in prudish Victorian and Edwardian time, allowing them freedom of movement in the water.

“There is nothing more liberating than swimming… All life’s shackles are washed away with the waves,” she once said.

She fought the tide of social norms that demanded women wear long bathing dresses with heavy hems that prevented them from revealing anything at all. For the sake of their feminine modesty, enclosed buggies called bathing machines even transported some women to the water's edge!

Her ‘figure suit’ was scandalously thigh-revealing, but when she travelled to London for a diving exhibition, she sewed a pair of stockings to a man’s bathing suit and the very first one piece swimwear for women was born. They even arrested Annette for indecency on a Boston beach in 1907, so she added a modesty panel (like a bikini skirt) soon after.

Thankfully, all you need to worry about on the beach or poolside these days causing an arresting sensation! You’ll find the hottest trends in one piece swimwear right here at VDM! Shop now!
